Welcome to Read With Mat
Every reader eventually faces the same problem.
You finish a great book, underline a few passages, close the cover, and place it back on the shelf. Weeks later, you remember how the book made you feel, but many of the ideas, questions, and connections that seemed so important in the moment have already begun to fade.
Read With Mat was created as an attempt to solve that problem.
This site is a place to collect annotations, reading notes, reflections, and essays inspired by the books that pass through my hands. Some of those books explore history and public life. Others are biographies, novels, works of philosophy, stories of exploration, or studies of the people and ideas that have shaped our world.
The goal is not to write formal reviews.
The goal is to read more carefully.
To ask better questions.
To revisit ideas worth remembering.
And to build a personal library that extends beyond the shelves themselves.
At the time of writing, I am working through Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy. What began as a book about politics has quickly become an exploration of leadership, conviction, sacrifice, and the difficult choices people face when principle comes into conflict with popularity.
Future notes will follow those questions wherever they lead; through history, literature, philosophy, biography, and beyond.
If you enjoy books, ideas, and the conversations they inspire, I hope you’ll find something worthwhile here.
Welcome, and thanks for reading.
— Mat
